DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE AT GRASSROOTS LEVEL COME UNDER THE MICROSCOPE IN JOS. By Elizabeth Safari Abah.

The popular serene atmosphere of Jos, capital of Plateau State came under subtle pressure from two sources at the beginning of the third week of March 2026. As the first drizzle of rains for the year which came over the preceding weekend imposed a wave of heat over the city, the arrival in noticeably high numbers of grassroots democracy warriors in the town from across North Central Nigerian States added to the intellectual heat in the air. They were gathered to brainstorm over the colours and challenges of grassroots democratic governance in Nigeria.

1. The three-day workshop was scheduled to hold at the sprawling Crispan Event Center, Rayfield, Jos. Items slated for dissecting, interrogation and exhaustive reappraisal included those considered central to the survival of the true practice of democracy at the level of government closest to the people – the Local Government level. The issues brought under critical brainstorming specifically cover grassroots democratic governance enhancement topics such Strengthening Legislative Capacity for Effective Local Government Governance, Financial Management & Budget Oversight and lastly but not the least important, Community Engagement And Public Participation. These issues which cover the grand norms of Local Government democratic governance were dispassionately dissected by the Resource Persons at the workshop to the great advantages of the participants.

One of the participants from Benue State who is the Leader, Ogbadibo Local Government Legislative Council, Hon Inyanda Peter Ogbada informed our correspondent that the great benefits derivable from the high brow engagements at the workshop is the timeless impartation of knowledge on the essential elements democratic governance he and other participants were able acquire. According to him, the reservoir of knowledge will forever guide them in their immediate and future political ambitions.

Other critical analysts are however of the opinion that the workshop marked a timely reminder of the fact that the much needed local government financial independence which the Supreme Court has made a loud judgement on will sooner than later become a reality on the grounds across Nigeria where it has not yet taken off.
